Ecuador became the newest country to legalize same-sex marriage

The Constitutional Court in Ecuador ruled in favour of marriage equality yesterday, making it the fifth country in South America to do so. The court ruled in a 5-4 decision that the country’s constitutional ban on marriage for same-sex couples was discriminatory. The judges said that their decision is binding on the country. The South American country has recognised sexual orientation as a protected characteristic since 1998, making it illegal to discriminate against people for being lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. Ecuador's LGBT rights movement has helped fuel a slate of changes in the country over the last decade.
